Weightless by the Kilbanes Projections

Sisterhood. Love. Vengeance. Flight. Inspired by a tale from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Weightless tells the story of two deeply devoted sisters, Procne and Philomela. Separated by circumstance, they must travel across worlds—facing devastating sacrifice and divine intervention—in order to reunite.

Weightless was performed by the Kilbanes at the WP Theater in New York City, NY. The production was based loosely on the Latin narrative poem, Metamorphoses. As the Assistant Projections Designer, I was primarily responsible for creating riveting animation and motion graphics for the production.

Diana and Acteon

The weaving sequence lasted a total of 5 minutes and 45 seconds on stage, but this clip was sped up to 33 seconds for the sake of time. As you can see from the video, “fibers” spread across the screen in different directions to represent the weaving of a child’s blanket with an image of the goddess Diana hunting with her bow.

Wing Flutters

Throughout the concert, there are many references to birds and wings. In this sequence, one of the sisters builds a pair of wings that will allow her to fly across the ocean for her the birth of her nephew. The director requested a silhouette of fluttering wings to use as a loop throughout the scene.

Audio-Responsive Rainbow

This sequence of rainbow-colored stripes was designed to respond to the Kilbanes’ song “Hollow Bone.” Due to copyright, I’ve replaced the song with another copyright-free rock song. Each stripe responds to a different group of instruments.
